This is a simple idea – a grading system of hunting regulations by state from the point of view of a hunter.   This simply ‘how easy is it to find and understand the regulations, are the online regulations and tools easy or complicated, and how expensive is it to hunt there?’  This is from the perspective of a hunter trying to find information on hunting whitetail deer, with the added data of an archery hunt.

This is the criteria:

  • Is the information easy to find? Can a user Google “(state) hunting regulations” and work from that search result?
  • Website: is it easy to use and understand, or is it a chore just to find the information needed? Is the information complete or full of ‘reference page X for details’ redirects?
  • Does the state hold a lottery system for non-residents or are over the counter licenses available?
  • How much does it cost to hunt, and is there a short term license available?
  • Are the hunting seasons easy to find and laid out in a logical manner?
  • Is public hunting available, if so, are the rules different? If the rules are different, are they easy to understand?
  • Are there major issues in hunting this state as a non-resident?

This project uses an A through D grading system, plus and minus are half point shifts.
